South America is a vast and beautiful land that sports the heat of the tropical Brazilian rainforests surrounding the Amazon, and the cool of the Glaciers National Park in Argentina. Both are natural attractions that, by themselves, are the tourist attraction. One article I found was in reference to the Amazon river dolphins that are having health problems and illegal capture problems related to tourism and development. The article written by Laurie Stepanek explains the impact on the species Inia geoffrensis -
“The biggest threat to all species of river dolphins now is land development by humans. Hydroelectric dams limit dolphins’ movements, and pollution causes developmental and other health problems. Some dolphins are captured in fishing nets, or are captured to be put in aquarium displays.”

Although the glaciers of Argentina are a fragile area environmentally, there are still cruise ships that will scan the waters surrounding the area to show the magnificence of the glaciers to travelers which leaves one to question the double-edged sword of tourism promoting conservation.
